A 2-day Fes desert tour is the fastest way to experience the massive Erg Chebbi sand dunes in Merzouga. Because the drive takes roughly 7 to 8 hours each way, it is an intense but highly rewarding journey through changing Moroccan landscapes.
Depart Fes early toward Ifrane (“Little Switzerland”) for European alpine architecture.
Azrou cedar forest to feed wild Barbary macaques.
Midelt (the apple capital) for lunch with mountain views.
Ziz Valley palm groves and dramatic volcanic rock gorges.
Arrive at Merzouga, mount camels for a 90-minute sunset dune trek, and check into a Berber desert camp for dinner and live drumming.
Merzouga Desert back to Fes.
Wake early to watch the sunrise over the golden dunes.
Eat breakfast at camp, ride camels back to the base hotel, and start the return drive.
Arrive back for hotel drop-off in Fes.
Your driver picks you up at your riad at 8:00 a.m. Depart Fes for Merzouga over the Middle Atlas Mountains through the cedar forests of Ifrane (the Switzerland of Morocco), Azrou , Midelt and crossing the Ziz Valley and its gorges towards Sahara.
We reach Merzouga before sunset. Arrived at the hotel at the foot of the Dunes of Erg-Chebbi .
After resting with a mint tea, the guide and camels will be waiting to carry you across the sandy Dunes of the Erg-Chebbi. You will enjoy the beauty of the sunset on the dunes and reach the desert camp to spend the night in a Berber tent.
At your desert shelter, your camels are hobbled, and mint tea is served. After a wonderful dinner, there will be a campfire and drums playing.
Day 2: Merzouga – Midelt — Ifrane — FezWe will wake up early to enjoy a magnificent sunrise on the dunes, then breakfast, shower, and take a camel ride back to the hotel.
After we leave for Fes through Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains, cedar forests of Azrou and stop to hand feed the monkeys.
We will continue via Ifrane, the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’ to arrive early evening to Fes.
