A 4-day desert tour from Meknes to Marrakech is one of the most diverse and scenic road trips you can take in Morocco. This cross-country journey connects the historic imperial city of Meknes to the red city of Marrakech, slicing completely through the Middle Atlas Mountains, the vast golden dunes of the Sahara Desert (Erg Chebbi), and the rugged High Atlas Mountains. Booking a 4-day itinerary gives you a balanced, unhurried rhythm, allowing a dedicated exploration day in the Merzouga desert area rather than spending all day rushing inside a vehicle.

Highlights:

Depart from your riad in Meknes and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first major stop is Ifrane, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco" because of its alpine architecture.

Enter the ancient Cedar Forest of Azrou, where you can pull over to view and feed the native wild Barbary macaque monkeys. Enjoy lunch in Midelt or the Berber village of Zaida.

Descend towards the desert, marveling at the dramatic transition into the Ziz Valley, home to Morocco’s largest continuous palm grove oasis.

Morning: Board a 4x4 vehicle to explore the Erg Chebbi dunes. Visit a nomadic family living in a traditional tent to share mint tea and learn about their lifestyle.

Head to Khamlia Village to experience the spiritual, hypnotic live drumming of the Gnawa musicians. For lunch, try a local culinary specialty: traditional Madfouna (Berber stuffed pizza).

Late Afternoon: Return to the base hotel to pack a light overnight bag. Meet your camel caravan and trek into the golden dunes as the sun sets over the Sahara horizon.

Arrive at a secluded luxury desert camp. Enjoy a multi-course Moroccan dinner, listen to live Berber drum music around a campfire, and stargaze in the deep desert silence. Sleep in a private tent with an ensuite bathroom.

Merzouga to Dades Gorges via Todra

Wake up early to catch a breathtaking desert sunrise over the dunes. Trek or take a 4x4 back to Merzouga for a full breakfast and a quick shower.

Drive through Erfoud, stopping at a local artisan workshop to see prehistoric fossils carved into beautiful marble.

Arrive at Todra Gorges. Take a scenic walk through the narrow limestone canyon where towering orange cliff walls reach up to 300 meters high.

Continue driving into the Dades Valley. Pass through unique, naturally eroded rock formations known as the "Monkey Fingers" and navigate the famous winding switchback roads. Sleep in a stunning cliffside kasbah or boutique hotel with dinner included.

Dades Gorges to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou

Travel through the Valley of Roses (Kelaat M'gouna), famous for its endless fields of Damascus roses and local cosmetic cooperatives.

Pass through the Skoura palm oasis on your way to Ouarzazate, Morocco's cinematic hub.

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This incredibly preserved earthen clay fortress has served as the backdrop for iconic films like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

Cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. At 2,260 meters high, this mountain pass offers sweeping panoramic views of traditional Berber villages clinging to cliff sides.

Descend into the bustling, vibrant city of Marrakech. Your driver will drop you off directly at your riad or the airport, concluding your epic desert tour.

Day 1: Meknes – Merzouga.

After breakfast, leave Meknes and go to Merzouga, passing through the cedar forests of Azrou.

Where the wild monkeys are located. It will be a good opportunity to take photos of the wilderness in Morocco. Lunch in the small Berber village of Zaida.

We continue the way through the Atlas Mountains, enjoying the landscapes of Midelt, to arrive at the small town of Rich, Erfoud, in which we’ll feel the beginning of the Saharan oasis of Tafilalet.

And then continue to Merzouga, an overnight hotel, Dar Morocco, or something similar with dinner and breakfast included.

Day 2: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi.

We start the trip after your breakfast at the hotel, in the direction of Gnawa music.

In a village of black people, after listening and dancing, our adventure will continue to the route of Rally Paris-Dakar, crossing the desert track in the direction of the Mefes Mines.

After about half an hour, we will drive through the desert stones. It will be fantastic.

Midday, we stop the car for tea with lunch of Berber pizza in nomad land.

You will experience how people can live in the desert with sandstorms in the summer and very warm weather. After lunch, we will come back to your hotel.

Relax a bit, then ride the camels into the dunes to spend the night in a luxury camp inside the dunes of Erg Chebbi Desert.

Spend one hour with the camels, then sandboard, then enjoy the sunset over the dunes. The tents have private bathrooms, followed by dinner and Berber music.

Day 3: Erg Chebbi – Dades Gorges.

After breakfast, take a shower in your comfortable tent, then start our journey to Dades Gorges through the Berber villages of the Atlas Mountains, Tinjdad, Tinghir, Todra Gorges, and Boumalne-Dades.

Overnight at Ksar Sultan Dades or something similar. Dinner and breakfast included.

Day 4: Dades Gorges – Marrakech.

After breakfast, leave Dades Gorges in the morning and continue towards the majestic Atlas Mountains.

Visit Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou and the Cinema Studio in Ouarzazate.

Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the highest road pass in Morocco, Tizi n’Tichka, at approximately 2,260m high, offering impressive views of valleys, mountains, and many Berber villages nearby.

Arrive in Marrakech in the evening. Drop-off is at your hotel.
