Student Trips to Morocco – Plan student trips to Morocco: educational itineraries, what students learn, safety and supervision, best time and tips for schools and universities.

Morocco is one of the best destinations in the world for a student trip. In a single week, students can walk through medieval medinas, meet Amazigh (Berber) families, cross the High Atlas mountains and sleep under the stars in the Sahara desert. It is a living classroom for history, geography, religion, languages and art, and it is only a short flight from most European cities.

This guide explains how to plan student trips to Morocco for schools, universities and youth groups: the best itineraries, what students learn, how safety and supervision work, and how a local team can organise everything for you.

Why Morocco is perfect for student trips

  • A real cultural immersion: Arab, Amazigh, African, Andalusian and French influences meet in one country. Students see them in the architecture, food, music and daily life.
  • Close to Europe: flights from Spain, France, Italy or the UK take two to four hours, which keeps travel time and costs low.
  • Every landscape in one trip: Atlantic coast, mountains, palm oases, canyons and the dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.
  • Languages in action: Arabic, Tamazight and French are spoken every day, so language students can practise for real.
  • Experiences students remember: a camel trek at sunset and a night in a desert camp are often the highlight of a school year.

What students learn in Morocco

History and architecture

The four imperial cities tell the story of Moroccan dynasties. In Fes, students explore one of the largest car-free medinas in the world and the Al Quaraouiyine, often described as the oldest university still running. Near Meknes, the Roman ruins of Volubilis show how far the Roman Empire reached. In the south, the earthen ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Geography and the environment

The road from Marrakech or Fes to Merzouga is a geography lesson: the High and Middle Atlas, cedar forests, the Dades and Todra gorges, oases and finally the Sahara. In the desert, students learn how nomads find water, how dunes move and why oases are so important for life in southern Morocco.

Culture, religion and daily life

Visits to a local family, a traditional bread oven, a cooperative or a souk show students how people live, work and share. Respectful discussions about Islam, traditions and hospitality help young people understand a culture different from their own.

Short trip: 3 days from Fes or Marrakech

If your programme is short, a 3 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech or a 3 days desert tour from Marrakech still includes the camel trek and a night in the Sahara.

Safety and supervision

Parents and teachers always ask the same question: is Morocco safe for students? Morocco welcomes millions of visitors every year, and with a good organisation a student trip is very safe. For every group we recommend:

  • Private transport with experienced local drivers and vehicles suited to the size of the group.
  • Licensed local guides in the cities and Berber guides in the desert.
  • Clear meeting points and free time only in safe, supervised areas.
  • Bottled water, simple and well-cooked meals, and attention to allergies and diets.
  • Accommodation chosen for groups: riads or hotels in the cities and private desert camps in Merzouga.

Before travelling, check the latest official travel advice from your own country and make sure every student has valid travel insurance.

Best time for a student trip to Morocco

Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are ideal: warm days, cool nights and comfortable temperatures in the desert. Winter trips are possible but desert nights are cold, so students need warm layers. Summer is very hot in the Sahara, so we plan desert activities at sunrise and sunset. Read more in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.

Practical tips for teachers and organisers

  • Dress code: ask students to cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages, out of respect for local customs.
  • Money: the local currency is the dirham. Small notes are useful for drinks and souvenirs.
  • Packing: comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, a scarf for the wind in the desert and a warm jacket for the night.
  • Photos: teach students to always ask before taking pictures of people.
  • Learning activities: give each student a small project (architecture, food, language, landscapes) to present after the trip.
