Merzouga vs Zagora – Compare dunes, distance from Marrakech and Fes, camps and activities to choose the best Sahara desert trip in Morocco.
If you are planning a desert trip in Morocco, you will soon face the big question: Merzouga or Zagora? Both are gateways to the Sahara, both offer camel rides and nights in desert camps, but the experience is very different. In this guide we compare the two so you can choose the desert that fits your time, budget and expectations.
Merzouga vs Zagora at a glance
- Dunes: Merzouga sits next to Erg Chebbi, a sea of high golden-orange dunes. Around Zagora the dunes are much smaller; the large dunes of Erg Chigaga are far beyond, near M’Hamid, and need a long 4×4 track.
- Distance from Marrakech: Zagora is closer (roughly 6 to 7 hours by road). Merzouga is further (roughly 9 to 10 hours), so it is usually visited on a 3 day trip or longer.
- Distance from Fes: Merzouga is the natural choice from Fes, about 7 to 8 hours through the Middle Atlas. Zagora is far from Fes.
- Landscapes on the way: the road to Merzouga crosses the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges. The road to Zagora follows the palm groves of the Draa Valley.
- Camps and activities: Merzouga has the widest choice of Berber and luxury camps, plus 4×4, quad, buggy and sandboarding in big dunes.

Why choose Merzouga
For most travellers, Merzouga is the Sahara they imagine: tall dunes that change colour from gold to red at sunset, silence and a sky full of stars. Erg Chebbi is easy to reach by road, so you can ride a camel straight from the edge of the village into the dunes and sleep in a camp surrounded by sand.
- The most spectacular dunes in Morocco that are easy to reach.
- Many camp options, from simple Berber camps to a luxury camp in Merzouga.
- Extra activities: 4×4 tours, quad and buggy rides, sandboarding, nomad visits and Gnawa music in Khamlia.
- Perfect start or end point for tours between Marrakech and Fes.

Why some travellers choose Zagora
Zagora is a good option if you have very little time. A 2 day trip from Marrakech reaches the Draa Valley and small dunes for a camel ride and a night in a camp. It is a nice taste of the desert, but it is not the Sahara of big dunes that most people picture.
- Shorter drive from Marrakech.
- Beautiful palm groves along the Draa Valley.
- Smaller dunes and fewer activities than in Merzouga.
How many days do you need?
From Marrakech, we recommend at least 3 days for Merzouga, so the drive is comfortable and you enjoy the gorges and kasbahs on the way. See our 3 days desert tour from Marrakech or the more relaxed 4 days desert tour from Marrakech. From Fes, Merzouga is possible in 2 days with our 2 days Fes desert tour, or you can cross the desert from Fes to Marrakech in 3 days.
Our verdict
If you can give the desert at least 3 days from Marrakech, or if you travel from Fes, choose Merzouga: the dunes, the camps and the experience are worth the extra road. Choose Zagora only if you have just 2 days and are starting and ending in Marrakech.
